'SOME FIGURES, SOME FARMING AND SOME FRUIT AND VEG'
1998 - 2008
At a London art school in the early sixties, during a criticism of students work Lawrence Alloway, the inventor of the term ‘Pop Art’, ridiculed a students depiction of a cow. He went on to say that the cow could no longer be of interest to art and we should direct our attention instead to, say, a Murphy-Richards toaster.
Even though not the creator of the offending beast, as a farmer’s son, I found this taboo troublingly close to home. It may even have sparked the gradually developed resolve to find ways to paint anything I wanted. This seems to be with me still.
