Lives & Works Melbourne (Woiworung)

David Wilson is a Melbourne based artist who has made a significant mark on the course of Australian sculpture. Known for his striking use of cast and painted bronze and aluminium, Wilson foregrounds a fluidity of surface and a painterly sensibility in works that defies expectations. Wilson's background in painting and foundation in modelling inform every facet of his work. From his early forays into modelled steel, to his more recent cast sculptures, colour and texture bring an appearance of organic fragility to his works. It is this sensory disjunction that gives Wilson's sculptures their unique presence.

Wilson studied at the National Gallery Art School in Melbourne. From the outset of his career he has forged his own path away from the twentieth century conventions of steel sculpture, constantly innovating with a variety of media. He's had a life-long involvement with the Victorian College of the Arts where he was head of the sculpture department, influencing generations of younger artists.

His works are held in the collection of the National Gallery of Australia as well as in each of the Australian state gallery collections. He has represented Australia at the Osaka Sculpture Triennial in Japan and at the Commonwealth Sculpture Symposium in Edmonton, Canada.
