Tony Phillips
Tony was born in Newcastle in 1980. In 2005 he completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts majoring in painting at the National Art School, Darlinghurst.
During his time at the National Art School Tony was taught by respected Defiance artist Peter Godwin, who influenced his use of egg tempura. This medium allows Tony to build up fine layers of paint, and gives his abstract works a beautiful luminous quality.
Tony has been exhibiting widely with Defiance since 2006, appearing in a number of group shows such as the annual ‘Same Place, Many Views' exhibition.
In 2005 Tony was a finalist in the Brett Whitely Travelling Art Scholarship. In the same year he was awarded the National Art School's Murray Sime Painting Prize and his work was highly commended in their Tim Olsen Figure Drawing Prize. In 2004 he was awarded Outstanding Achievement in 2nd year painting at the School.
Tony's work is held in a number of private and public collections throughout Australia, including Mosman Art Gallery and Westmead Hospital.
