Lyndon Dadswell (1908-1986) Widely regarded as one of Australia's most acclaimed sculptors of his generation, Lyndon Dadswell was only 21 (1929-32) when he worked with Paul R. Montford on Melbourne's Shrine of Remembrance and was commissioned to carve the 12 sandstone panels in the shrine's interior depicting all of the AIF units of World 1. He studied at the Julian Ashton School, Sydney 1924-1926 and East Sydney Technical College 1926-1929 where he was a student of the influential sculptor Rayner Hoff, the then newly appointed head teacher of sculpture. In 1933 Dadswell won the Wynne Prize for Sculpture for his uncast, plaster figures Youth making it affordable for him to travel to London to study at the Royal Academy. He returned to Sydney in 1928 and took up the position of a teacher in sculpture at East Sydney Technical College where his teaching career was both long and distinguished until 1967. The Second World War interrupted teaching and in 1942 was appointed official war artist. In Sydney his public work can be seen at the Commonwealth Bank at the corner of George and Market Street, The Jewish War Memorial in Darlinghurst and the Sandringham Gardens, the memorial to King George V and King George VI in Hyde Park. Lyndon Dadswell has been the recipient of several awards and honours for a lifetime of service to the arts and in 1978 was made a Companion of St Michael and St George. In 1978 an exhibition spanning forty-five years of his work was mounted by the Art Gallery of New South Wales. The Estate of the late Lyndon Dadswell is represented by Defiance Gallery, Sydney. Two bronze figurative sculptures by Lyndon’s Dadwell have recently been exhibited at Rex Irwin’s Gallery, Sydney as part of a bronze figurative exhibition including works by Degas, Giacometti , Frink and Moore.
