Kyle Murrell graduated from the National Art School with Honours in 2013, receiving the Clithroe Honours Scholarship and was the winner of the John Olsen Prize for figure drawing and the Elioth Gruner Prize for landscape painting through the Art Gallery of NSW.

A recent recipient of the Paddington Art Prize, Defiance Award, Murrell maintains a steady practice exhibiting regularly in group shows in Sydney and is represented in public collections including The National Art School, St Vincents Hospital and Gadens Lawyers (Singapore).

"I rely on drawing as a means of exploration and regeneration. It sustains my practice by playing multiple roles in my work; as a notion of ideas, as a working drawing and developing a sequence of thoughts. Through an inexhaustible and repetitious process, I deconstruct and obscure the subject to allow the rhythm of line and mark making to activate and penetrate space. These experiential references create compositional and pictorial devices that inform my painting. The dissolution and re-invention of forms resolves the contest between meaning and structure through their oscillation, fusion and sometimes juxtaposition."
