Journeys gathers Tim Kyle's recent ‘portraits of circumstance' to form an assembly of earnest, absurd and deeply human figures, each of which draws us into its own inner space and prompts us to reflect on patterns and events of the world at large. Closely observed and sincerely executed, these figures are occasionally recognisable individuals; yet entail a summation of all human experience. Modelled in poses ranging from the quotidian to the eccentric, each character in this exhibition appears caught in a moment of hermetic interiority, just on the point of continuing their path through life.
The sculptures, cast in bronze and epoxy, encapsulate Kyle's astute, empathic and wry awareness of humanity. He elicits these qualities in each of us as we voyeuristically project narratives about the past and future of each compact figure- recognising in them the gravity of human flesh and also the tenacity to continue on their given journey. These sculptures are darkly humorous witnesses to our society and the events that form each of us.
Journeys is Tim Kyle's first solo exhibition at Defiance Gallery. He is a regular finalist in Sculpture by the Sea and the Wynne Prize at the AGNSW, which he won in 2003.
