André Bowen
André Bowen is currently working on a series of atmospheric studio interiors. Within the limitations of the space and subject matter, he explores the endless possibilities of arranging objects and figures as if they were actors on a theatre stage.
Much of Andréˈs inspiration comes from painters whose works draw largely from scenes and studies of their studio, such as Velasquez and Vermeer. Frequent trips to Madrid‘s Museo del Prado have made an impression not only on his painting techniques and use of light, but also inspired him to make his own paints and oils through researching old master techniques during the last four years.
Living and working in Berlin, he now incorporates Australian painting traditions into a European context. As opposed to painting plein air where the main focus is on keyed up colours and strong light, Northern Europe is the perfect place for interior painting, exploring cool lights and coloured greys. Direct observation and an emphasis on drawing situates his work in the tradition of an arte contemplativa.
André Bowen, born 1974, holds a Bachelor of Arts from the National Art School in Sydney and an Honours degree from UNSW College of Fine Arts.
André's work has appeared in a number of shows in Australia and the United States. He has held residencies throughout the world, in Berlin, Leipzig, Paris and New York. His work is held in the ICAA collection Sydney, and the Molongo Collection, Canberra, as well as in private collections in Australia and America.
André began exhibiting his oil and tempera works with Defiance in 2007, appearing in group shows such as the annual ‘Same Place, Many Views' exhibition
