5 Easy Pieces online gallery
Five Easy Pieces 1999 and 2011 - ‘5 Easy Pieces’ was devised by Director, Campbell Robertson-Swann and was first exhibited at Defiance Gallery in 1999. The exact same five steel elements were issued to 30 upcoming, mid-career and leading Australian sculptors to create a sculpture. The rules: do not add anything except a weld and a coat of paint, do not subtract anything, manipulate each element as you wish. The exhibition was a celebration of the unique and broad sculptural language that exists in Australian sculpture, even when the artists are working with the same elements. The show had two openings. The first for artists and critics without a catalogue to test their knowledge and their eye by asking them to match the sculpture with the sculptor. With many of the works it was like looking at the artists’ signature, others were more challenging. The second opening was for collectors and the general public. The exhibition was a huge success and created such a buzz. Twelve years later and 5 Easy Pieces is back. Same rules, same pieces, same concept. While some artists are making their 5 Easy Pieces return many are making their 5 Easy Pieces debut. The outcome is an exciting and diverse exhibition that reflects the depth of innovation and intellectual rigour in Australian sculpture today.
